There’s been some questioning over whether or not the animal was even alive to begin with. A stuffed animal has much less mass than that of an actual puppy body, and would not fly with that much velocity, even if it was a beanie. Besides, look how its hanging.
If that animal wasn’t alive, it was before at some point. So take some comfort in knowing that when he’s reviewed, if he isn’t discharged or imprisoned for sending the animal to its death, he will be charged for tossing the dead body.
Also, don’t let appearances deceive. If it is a dead animal, it probably died as a usual war casualty, but you don’t know that. He might have killed it himself beforehand.
The puppy yelped, how on earth could you say it was dead beforehand?

Hello, I am not sure of your name, only the you are the CO for a soldier named David Mortari. My father was in the Army for 32 years and I am so proud of most of the soldiers. I am only not enlisted due to asthma and health conditions, which destroyed my dreams of fighting for this country. I was very upset and enraged to see the video of David throwing a puppy off of a cliff. This is completely inhumane and sick. If it were my choice he would be up for charges and dishonorable discharge. I realize the dreadful things soldiers must see and experience everyday over seas, and truthfully, I wish I could be there myself, no matter what the consequences. I have counseled and consoled many of the local soldiers and families, and fought for the respect and understanding of the military, being not something I take lightly. However, I feel that this event never should have taken place, and certainly not posted on the internet. This soldier makes the military look bad, and is exactly the reason many Americans feel that soldiers are nothing but ruthless monsters. Yes, fight for us, kill or torture terrorists, even those carrying bombs, no matter what age, but to throw a puppy off a cliff? come on now, I hope that some action is taken against this soldier and whoever posted this video. I am no longer honored to have that soldier ‘serve’ this country or disgrace the military. (tried to send this to CO, but email no longer active!)

I think the lessons learned from soldiers facing the public when returning home from Vietnam should be remembered.
Irregardless of weather the puppy was dead or not, Mortari should be held accountable for his actions, though childlike in nature, as well as his accompanying companion, who also showed a great disrespect for life and dishonored the US as a whole.
These things are a part of war and worse should be anticipated as truth. The unnecessary death of innocent, including children, the displacement of thousands of family s, etc. , are all part of it.
War is an uncivil means , serving a greater civil cause.
However as American, we do not stand for such things and should never permit an act of such to go unnoticed.
