I’ve been digging the newest Sea and Cake album, Car Alarm, which marks their 10th studio album for Thrill Jockey Records and finds the band chugging along with more gumption than their prior releases. Quickened tempos, a dash of distortion and some overall, well, energy for lack of better term. Don’t get me wrong, the Chicago quartet do jazz-y, mellow sound sculptures like no-one else, and Sam Prekop’s downy vocals are pretty much always on the mark, but I appreciate a bit of vim and vigor every now and then.
Check out the video for “Weekend” right here:
Press release and tour dates follow the jump, but if I mention their Tuesday, December 2 @ Great American Music Hall tour date right here maybe Thrill Jockey will find it in their hearts to send me a hard copy of the album and tickets to she show…
The Sea and Cake, one of indie rock’s most respected, influential and ground breaking bands, is hitting the road in support of their eighth full-length album “Car Alarm”. Due out on October 21st, “Car Alarm” sounds like The Sea and Cake in overdrive. It sounds like a band that’s honed their songs to a sharp edge. Brimming with a live energy, the new songs capture a band at their finest. The trademark vocals of Sam Prekop intertwine with his and Archer Prewitt’s languid guitar lines. Driven by the rhythm engine of John McEntire’s drumming expertise and Eric Claridge’s propulsive and prodigal bass lines, the album exudes a kinetic energy. Enhanced by the reintroduction of keys and electronic flourishes, Car Alarm is another step forward for a band who has always been ahead of the pack and they’re playing a show in your town!
