Bibliophile 6/3/08: Film Adaptations

[The following was written by Synthesis Weekly columnist Emilie Clark. She can be reached at emilie@synthesis.net.]

Coming Soon
It’s a well-known fact that people like to adapt movies from books. It’s also a well-known fact that most of these efforts suck. So it’s my job to warn you about upcoming adaptations so you have ample time to read the book. This gives you the chance to complain about inconsistencies and general “suckiness” while still in the theater, making you look learned and therefore more attractive. You can thank me later.

Ed Harcourt Interview: A Prelude to my best SXSW Moment

Posted on 02. May, 2008 by spencer in Music

When I met up with Ed Harcourt during SXSW 08, we had a sweet interview on the roof of the Hilton Hotel. That was a cool experience, Ed was down. His music isn’t as well known in the States as it is in the UK, and hopefully that’s something that will change when he releases “The Beautiful Lie” on June 3rd. Here, check the interview:

However, when I went to film a live song the next day, it turned into a rad adventure with Ed performing a song exclusively for us [...]

And The Blind Shall See: Bionic Eyes In Britain

For the first time in Britain two blind patients have been implanted with bionic eyes. The procedure was preformed at Moorfields Eye Hospital in central London last week and the two patients are said to be “doing well.”

Surgeons implanted an electronic device into the back of the eye to allow the patients to distinguish objects as pictures made up of spots of light.
The device works with a tiny camera mounted in a pair of glasses which transmits a wireless signal via a small processor on a belt into a [...]

The worlds smallest gun is the worlds biggest failure.

The worlds smallest gun is the worlds biggest failure.

Thank God the Worlds smallest gun will not be sold in the United States, because if I were to die from a bullet wound from this piece of shit I’d like to be buried in the worlds smallest casket, wearing the worlds smallest suit. The gun is only 2.16 inches long but fires real bullets up to 367 feet. The gun would look great on a key chain, and while your fumbling for your house key you could blow off half your face. I think I remember these at [...]

The Return of UK’s Subhumans

Seminal political punk rock group The Subhumans, who in the 80s reminded people in the punk scene that inventiveness and raw energy are not mutually exclusive, are on the return. Their new album, Internal Riot, was released a few short months ago, ending a nine-year hiatus from new material. Now they’re bringing it back to the states. The Subhumans are back out on tour and will be hitting the US west coast in April. Check out the live dates after the jump.

The Next: Good Shoes

The Next: Good Shoes

I’m a terrible dancer. My brain and body operate on two different wavelengths, but as I get older, I’m growing less and less likely to give a fuck. If you get a few Jameson on the rocks in me, I’m ready to go. And you’d better be wearing a cup.
It must be a sight to behold, and not in a good way. So I have to apologize to my coworkers if they’ve seen me chair bopping like a demoniacally possessed weeble-wobble lately. Good Shoes latest album Think Before You [...]

Future on the Left
First, just listen.
http://www.myspace.com/futureoftheleft
Now I can go on about how I liked McLusky but this is way more intricate, jagged and ultimately more interesting AND rocking, but again, I just recommend you give it a listen. If you like bands like Fugazi, Jawbox and Dismemberment Plan, you will thank me. If you like lo-fi post-punk recordings, you will thank me. If you like getting your socks knocked off by UK bands, you will thank me.
