Fruit Bats: “Ruminant Band”

Fruit Bats
Ruminant Band
Sub Pop
Riding a wave somewhere between country and kitschy hipster pop—though not overdosing on either—the Fruit Bats are no doubt onto something with their fourth full-length, Ruminant Band. The music itself carries a certain weight of Sticky Fingers Stones (see “Tegucigalpa”) while singer/pianist Eric Johnson croons leads in a fashion akin to James Mercer of The Shins. Cuts like “Beautiful Morning Light” speak to the revivalist nature which Ruminant Band embraces, and it’s not troubling to imagine these boys paired-up with Sub Pop brethren Band of Horses for [...]

Sunny Day Real Estate Is Back

Posted on 22. Jun, 2009 by Dallas VonKillbot in Music

In a brief, very uninformative thread over at Absolute Punk, it was noticed that there’s a pre-sale going on for 1 show in Atlanta for a Sunny Day Real Estate show. Although there hasn’t been any major press release (or at least that I’m familiar with) from the band’s label or PR, I’m assuming this is legit considering it’s Ticketmaster. My guess is that some over-zealous college intern was supposed to wait on the news and accidentally posted it between bong rips.
Either way, I’m sure that a ton [...]

Flight of the Conchords Season 2

Posted on 17. Dec, 2008 by Dallas VonKillbot in TV

It took me about 5 or 6 episodes of watching Conchords to realize if it was funny or not, but when I hit the David Bowie episode I was immediately sold. Besides The Office and Always Sunny in Philly, this has to be one of the best scripted shows on TV. The only thing that’s kind of a downer is that it’s on HBO, which I’m too poor to afford at the current moment.
Thanks to a lucrative deal between HBO and Will Ferrell’s Funny or Die.com [...]

Andrew Bird and Loney Dear Tour Dates

Posted on 20. Nov, 2008 by spencer in Music

Wow, my heart really sank when I realized that I will be unable to catch the Andrew Bird / Loney Dear show in San Francisco. Andrew Bird issued one of thebest performances I caught at SXSW 2007, and Loney Dear’s “I Am John” never gets rest with me, appearing on pretty much every mix tape I’ve made in the last two years.
I guess I missed the memo that Loney Dear split from Sub Pop, but they (or he, as the band is basically centered around Emil Svanängen) will have [...]

Flight of the Conchords, “Ladies of the World” Premeire

One of them was an extra on the Lord of the Rings. The other one looks like an ogre librarian. Together they are Flight of the Conchords, and they leave Tenacious D quaking in their boots. Here’s the premeire of their video for “Ladies of the World,” available on Sub Pop records.

SP20 Festival Lineup Announced, Celebrate Sub Pop’s 20th in Seattle

As previously mentioned, Sub Pop has been planning a little party for their 20th anniversary. Rumors circulate, but now, Sub Pop has made an official announcement. From their press release:
In unabashedly conspicuous celebration of 20 years of not going out of business (sometimes only barely), Seattle’s Sub Pop Records will gather past and present label-mates for a series of events, including a two-day festival at Marymoor Park on July 12 & 13 and a comedy show on July 11 at Seattle’s Moore Theatre. Proceeds from the sale of tickets will [...]

Synthesis Band You’ve Probably Heard of Band of the Day: Mudhoney

Synthesis Band You’ve Probably Heard of Band of the Day: Mudhoney

With all the ballyhoo about Sub Pop’s 20th Anniversary, it’s nice to see one of the bands that made Sub Pop SUB POP are still around and doing well. Today, Synthesis Editor Ryan “Daddy” Prado handed me a copy of Mudhoney’s forthcoming album The Lucky Ones, and it’s pretty damn good. In fact, it sounds like something that would’ve been put out by the label 20 years ago. It’s fuzzy and sloppy and probably hasn’t even caught whiff of Pro-Tools.
Mudhoney’s previous two albums for Sub Pop, Since We’ve Become Translucent [...]
