Riding a wave somewhere between country and kitschy hipster pop—though not overdosing on either—the Fruit Bats are no doubt onto something with their fourth full-length, Ruminant Band. The music itself carries a certain weight of Sticky Fingers Stones (see “Tegucigalpa”) while singer/pianist Eric Johnson croons leads in a fashion akin to James Mercer of The Shins. One of my many shitty bands is venturing North this weekend to play some shows in Portland and Seattle with our good friends Ruth, and a band who I had never heard of called Derby, who are from Portland and were kind enough to get us on a bill at the newly refurbished (and apparently super badass) Mississippi Studios.

I have a fever and the only prescription is MORE BIG BUSINESS.
Yes, Jared and Coady, the two-headed monster behind sludge-rock titans Big Business (and rhythm section for The Melvins) are at it again, this time adding guitarist Toshi Kasai into the mix for their new album Mind The Drift (out April on HydraHead). Make that a three-headed monster.
