Bobby Birdman: New Moods

There is something truly special about Rob Kieswetter’s, aka Bobby Birdman’s, current record New Moods…

Luis Dubuc, the brains and brawn behind Texas’ The Secret Handshake,
has been putting out some quality electronic pop-rock since about 2004, and it looks like there’s no stop to his current project anytime soon. Dubuc is just about ready to drop his latest release,y Name Up In Lights, which is set to come out on April 21st via Triple Crown. Appropriately, he’s heading out to spread his love in early May for an East coast tour.
As Luis Dubuc aka The Secret Handshake prepares to release his [...]

Serge Gainsbourg — Histoire de Melody Nelson

A caricature-looking Frenchman with a penchant for penning songs pertaining to lust, drugs and morbid infatuation, Serge Gainsbourg’s output from the late ‘50s through the 1970s remains a hallmark in the annals of sexual pop music.

Synthesis Band of the Day Band You’ve Never Heard of: The Amblers

Written by Dustin Bennett in November of 2008
The house was almost empty—random items strewn about, half-packed boxes and a few pieces of furniture still lingering. The setting very much fit the part of a house being moved out of. But on this particular afternoon, it also happened to be a very quiet, practical place to have a conversation. As notebooks and tape recorders were being cracked out, the four members of Chico’s Amblers began to make themselves comfortable in the house’s living room, sitting on whatever couch-space or oddball cushions [...]

Punk Goes Pop 2 Drops March 3rd

Posted on 17. Dec, 2008 by Dallas VonKillbot in Music

I remember when the first Punk Goes Pop was released:  I was probably in my sophomore year in high school, most likely filled with angst and a little THC.  The album was released right around the time the teen queens and boy bands were starting to sell millions of records on a daily basis, and the CD was pretty bad ass considering there were covers of artists like Mandy Moore and Madonna.  Quick note: Yellowcard throws down a mean version of Michelle Branch’s “Everywhere”.
The latest installment of the Punk Goes… series seems pretty legit, [...]

Kanye Can’t Sing

If you’ve been hiding under a rock recently, let me give you a little insight into what’s absolutely raping the music industry at the current moment.  No, this isn’t a Major v. Indie thing, it’s not about file sharing and it’s not about Chinese Democracy; it’s about the discovery of a piece of software generally called Auto-Tune. A some years back, engineers and producers would use this tool as a form of pitch correction on vocalists, improperly set up guitars, etc. The system worked, because there was still [...]

Hell Fuck Yeah! Spencer’s Back

Breath easy internet, I have returned to my blogging post. Over the last week and a half I’ve been journeying up the Pacific Coast with Bear Hunter . As it turns out, when I try and write on my laptop while in the van I start to puke all over my band mates — hence, my absence from Synthesis Blog. Over the next few days I will be recounting my harrowing journey (in between fascinating posts about pop stars getting busted for drugs, children with weird growths on their bodies [...]

Synthesis Band You’ve Never Heard Of Band Of The Day: Matters & Dunaway

Posted on 23. May, 2008 by spencer in Band of the Day, Music

Today, Synthesis’ Band You’ve Never Heard of Band of the Day will stray a little bit into the electro side of the rock spectrum. And by “a little bit” I mean entirely. Boston electro-rock duo Matters & Dunaway meet at the mid-point where pleather-clad ravers chat Matrix post-apocalyptic fashion and The Faint still mattered. Their is the sound of a not to distant future that was realized in the last decade, with neon-lit tubes blurring by at chemically enhanced speeds. Their new EP, Feel The Future, is available now via [...]
