Fruit Bats: “Ruminant Band”

Fruit Bats
Ruminant Band
Sub Pop
Riding a wave somewhere between country and kitschy hipster pop—though not overdosing on either—the Fruit Bats are no doubt onto something with their fourth full-length, Ruminant Band. The music itself carries a certain weight of Sticky Fingers Stones (see “Tegucigalpa”) while singer/pianist Eric Johnson croons leads in a fashion akin to James Mercer of The Shins. Cuts like “Beautiful Morning Light” speak to the revivalist nature which Ruminant Band embraces, and it’s not troubling to imagine these boys paired-up with Sub Pop brethren Band of Horses for [...]

YouTube Losing Half a Billion Dollars a Year

thisiswhywecanthave

Interesting piece on Slate today about YouTube, the supposed grand-champion of user-generated content, which is of course the basis of the Web 2.0 revolution. According to analysts best guesses, the site loses around half-a-billion dollars a year

Jim Cramer, Rick Santelli and The Class Warfare Meme

If, like me, you’re the kind of person that loves wasting the hours away by watching the degenerative brain candy that is cable news, then you’ve no doubt heard that reliable old political nugget “class warfare” bandied about quite a bit lately in regards to the tax policies of our new President. This is especially true if, like me, you sometimes tune into those cable news channels that focus ostensibly on “business” such as CNBC, or that bastion of fair-and-balanced reporting, FOX News, both of which have been busy mustering their troops to prepare to face this conflict head on.

In what has quickly become titled as the “Hot Chick Singers Tour” amongst internet boards, No Doubt has confirmed rumors of breaking their hiatus since 2004 by announcing a summer tour along with pop giants Paramore. For the amount of shit that we give Video Matt for pretty much reaching stalker levels in his quest to court Haley Williams, I’m actually pretty excited about this tour. No Doubt pretty much made Gwen Stefani (not the other way around), so I’m stoked to see what she can do when [...]

Simpsons Cast Inks Deal: 20th Season is a Go

For those waiting in clench-jawed anticipation for another season of The Simpsons, there’s good news. With the announcement that the voice cast is getting raises, plans for the show’s 20th season are all but cemented. No doubt the cast does a great job voicing so many characters (was anyone else flabbergasted at The Simpsons Movie credits?), but one has to wonder if the raise could end up being the financial liability nail in the coffin.
With a healthy, yet declining viewership and continuous claims from long-time fans and critics that [...]
