Synthesis Band You’ve Never Heard of Band of the Day: Crocodile

I might write about metal a lot, but I still have a sweet tooth for bouncy, sappy indie pop with boy-girl harmonies. Crocodile is from Oklahoma City, OK, and they look like real nice people. The group features Dusty Nelson on drums and husband-wife vocal/guitar/keyboard duo Raechel and Derek Brown up front. What makes them awesome?
They use custom-made guitar effects and analog synths.
Their songs are unnervingly bouncy and fun. There’s even one called “Dinosaur.”
I’ve always been fond of the world “crocodile.” Not only is it associated with another sort [...]
Synthesis Band You’ve Never Heard Of Band Of The Day: Citay

I grew up with a healthy distaste for any sounds resembling the driving forces behind hippie dancing. Grateful Dead? FUCK no. Jefferson Airplane? Eat shit and die.
Luckily, I’ve gotten a little longer in the tooth and just when it hits me that I’ve been living in a cave for 22 years, I hear Citay and am instantly whisked away to the lush hills of the Bay, wincing at sea winds with a rucksack full of provisions, thumbing my way to the city to catch this band live.
The group has harnessed [...]
Synthesis Band You’ve never Heard of band of the Day: Avi Wisnia

“How the son of a rabbi from Jersey went Brazilian, we’re not quite sure…”
Isn’t that the plot to The Jazz Singer?
Avi Wisnia reminds me of when I first started listening to lounge music. This is back just before graduating high school, fresh off a stint with thrash metal, and a bit burned out by its dueling harmonized guitar leads. I yearned for something a bit more mellow; music that showcased the sonorous voice of a veteran stage vamp or mustachioed crooner. Those smoky bar jazz yearnings have been [...]
Synthesis Band You’ve Never Heard of Band of the Day: Iceage Cobra

Today on Synthesis’ Long Winded and Unfortunately Titled Synthesis Band You’ve Never Heard of Band of the Day, we bring you a band that some have actually heard about. Seattle’s Iceage Cobra (originally from Spokane) has been around for a while and done a few national tours (including stops at media-whore mecca SXSW), and released a full length album, Brilliant Ideas from Amazing People. The album’s radical, but you want to see these guys live because SHIT GETS NUTTY.
Mic stands are ditched, full stacks blow your ears out, high [...]
Synthesis Band You’ve Never Heard of Band of the Day – Thursday 1/17
Posted on 17. Jan, 2008 by James in Music
When I moved out to California, I drove cross-country with my dad. We ate a lot and stopped at every major college town along the way. I took my picture in front of Touchdown Jesus. We couldn’t get a hotel in Cheyenne, WY, because there was a rodeo in town and everyone was booked. That was the first time I ever tasted sauce with chipotle in it. I wasn’t sure how it was pronounced. None of this has anything to do with the Synthesis Band You’ve Never Heard of Band [...]
Synthesis Band You’ve Never Heard of Band of the Day: 99 Cent Whore

You’re either going to love our band of the day, or hate it with a bloody passion. The jury’s still out for me, but at the moment I’m leaning toward the former. This act, 99 Cent Whore, featuring actress Mary Birdsong (who plays Deputy Kimball on Comedy Central’s Reno 911!) revs up the schlock and shock factor of its titular frontwoman’s profession. Seems her life didn’t turn out exactly how she thought it would: hence, “99 Cent Whore,” her name and vocation.
The music is macho-rock/pop, full of fist-pumping,headband sweating potential, [...]
Synthesis Band You’ve Never Heard of (unless you live in San Franisco) Band of the Day: Magic Bullets

I don’t know what happened here, but I just got a copy of Magic Bullets’ a Child but in life yet a DOCTOR in love (Words on Music Records), which was released last May. This San Francisco band writes songs that are cut from similar material as The Walkmen, and singer Phil Benson sings like he’s the bastard child of Tom Verlaine. Both good things in my book.
I imagine this is one of the hundreds of albums I got between march and June of last year, listened to once for [...]
