Original Thought In The Blogosphere and The Room Of Endless Mirrors.

Growing up (occasionally) reading my local daily paper beyond the comics section, it struck me how much of the news was regurgitated. It seems even back then, the Associated Press wrote at least one third of the Sacramento Bee.

I haven’t really picked up the Bee since I moved from Sacramento a decade or so ago (or pretty much any other newspaper besides the Synthesis or the CN&R, for that matter) but I imagine the margin of original content to canned hasn’t improved.

But then I look at our blog site, and the litany of similar blogs clamoring for your attention. How much of our content is just re-posted from somewhere else? Sure, you get our comment with our spin, arguably unique if not spellbinding, but apart from our reviews of albums, movies and whatnot, or the increasingly rare postings from our nation-traveling correspondent Video Matt, it’s all repeat information, one source away from the source away from the original source at best.

And as much as I’d like this blog site to be something more than a room of endless mirrors, frankly, I’m not given enough hours to devote something meaningful to these coded pages. Plus, most of our staff has been cut, or otherwise fucked off. I was told that we have about 1,000 return visitors who frequent here. To them I say: sorry, but I don’t see this getting better anytime soon, so enjoy reading reviews of bands you’ve never really listened to, clips from youtube, and occasional flashes of soul-searching honesty. You can only bail water on a sinking ship for so long before you pop on a life-preserver and hope for the best.
