I rag on Auto-Tune all the time; mainly due to the fact that it’s a piece of shit that most people abuse to either get that damn Cher sound or, even worst, turning a bad vocalist into a pop sensation. It’s killing recordings, because of using it as a tool to clean up a few slight issues, it’s become the foundry of how to record modern vocals. I’m a self admitted hypocrite, considering the fact that true purists would say using that at all would constitute a fraudulent recording… but those dudes are jerks anyways, so don’t worry bout it.
Melodyne might be either injection that cures the cancer that’s set in on the music industry in the last 10 years or the subsequent atom bomb that kills us all . Their Direct Note Access system can still function like a vocal tuner, but it has so many other features that it’s tempting not to play it off as just a pitch correction tool. For the lack of better words, watch the video below.
I had my first chance to use Melodyne yesterday while messing around with a vocal loop. This thing can be used to make entirely new melodies, chords, etc. Granted I wasn’t even playing with the big boy, the one seen here, but I definitely got a feel for what it was capable of. The technology at hand just baffles me. If you’re a music nerd, check this stuff out.
