I don’t usually do the Band of the Day thing, but today I’m going to hijack it. Because I already love Flobots…
Hailing from Denver, Colorado, the group consists of:
Jonny 5 – Emcee, Vocals
Brer Rabbit – Emcee, Vocals
Andy Guerrero – Guitar, Vocals
Mackenzie Roberts - Viola, Vocals
Jesse Walker – Bass
Kenny Ortiz – Drums
Joe Ferrone – Trumpet
… who all made a killer album in 2007 called Fight With Tools, and were recently signed to Universal Republic Records. Check out the songs on their MySpace site, especially their hit “Handlebars” which recently made it’s debut on LA’s KROQ. Their sound (not their message) is like Eminem meets Cake and it’ll have you repeating the last four syllables of everything you say. Everything you say. Everything you say. (Ok, I realize that was 5 syllables.) Catchy beats, interesting lyrics, and a message of hope for a “fully engaged, non-violent society” equals ice cream to my ears. Here’s their website. Check ‘em out, add a song to your MySpace page and don’t forget to sing along.
Band of the Day: Flobots,

Agreed. Flobots helped to sell out the Troubadour when they opened up for Portugal. The Man a couple weeks ago. Go them.
I made it a new game to come up with things that sound like “I can ride my bike with no handlebars, no handlebars, no handlebars.” One of my favorites is “I can pay my bills with no credit card, no credit card, no credit card.” …but it’s not true.
Here are the ones that are true:
“I can find my way to the nearest bar, the nearest bar, the nearest bar.”
“I can drink vodka like a super star, a super star, a super star.”
“I can walk in heels really really far, really really far, really really far.”
That last one was kinda weak, haha.
Props to the middle aged woman on the patio of the Harbor Grill in Dana Point for offering up the “credit card” gem. Gotta give “credit” where “credit” is due. Haha.

This is one of the best up-and-coming bands I’ve heard out of the rock/hiphop cross genre I’ve heard in a really long time. “Fight With Tools” didn’t get nearly the cred it deserved when it came out, mostly I think because “Handlebars” wound up being really overplayed — and honestly, I thought “Rise” was a better track anyway. The thing that impresses me most about this band is their tireless support of Rock the Vote this year. Did anybody else see Johnny 5′s excellent PSA? If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out, because even though the election is over, he makes a lot of intelligent and prescient points.
