Gifts from Enola
From Fathoms
The Mylene Sheath
The first great thing to notice about Gifts from Enola is their ability to translate pure energy to a compact disc. After a minute-long introduction of atmospheric guitars, quick tremolo and occasional cymbal builds, "Benthos" takes off into outer space with a triumphant blast of drenched reverb and delay; though seeming a bit pretentious and self-serving, one cannot help but be a bit impressed by the chaotic wall of sound. "Weightless Thought" cleverly mixes nearly inaudible screams into the fold of the mathy mess. "Thawed Horizon" speeds things up with the usage of finger taps and blast beats. Though many indie scenes are overcrowded with hoity-toity masturbatory hipsters, these Virginians are actually pretty interesting and unique.
