One might wonder what a living legend that has reinvented himself several times could possibly do to keep the legacy alive. Well, the answer is right here with Preliminaires. Uplifted by the writings of French novelist Michel Houellebecq's The Possibility of An Island, Iggy Pop has wandered into new territory, the first of which being jazz-infused pop on the opening and closing tunes "Les Feuilles Mortes" and "Les Feuilles Mortes (Marc's Theme)." Both tracks include sexy instrumentation from mellow horns and driving, but controlled percussion with Iggy slyly vocalizing in French with a baritone range. "I Want to Go to the Beach" is a gloomy-vibed track centering on Pop's skeptical lyrics and sedating melody, akin to Lou Reed's "Perfect Day." Another highlight is the energetic single "King Of The Dogs," with its pleasant throwback mood. Though Preliminaires may not be Iggy's most outstanding record to date, it may be his most unique.
