iPhone vs. BlackBerry

I know--this isn't the hottest topic right now since the latest iPhone model came out about a month ago...but I just jumped ship (from a BlackBerry Curve) and was interested to hear other people's thoughts on this debate. I know Bill here at Synthesis jumped to the iPhone when the first generation of the iPhone came out a few years ago and was thoroughly loving it. Bill--have you gotten the latest one??
For the last two years I've been using my BlackBerry Curve and loving it (most of the time). Since, before I had my Curve I had the Motorola Q and that was just crap in a plastic container that looked like a phone. But now, with the speed of this new iPhone, plus the variety and convenience of the applications you can put on it--combined with the good amount of memory--I was finally convinced that it would beat out the best BlackBerry model which I would say is the Bold.
Immediately upon buying my iPhone yesterday I started to have some buyers remorse/fear in part due to the fact that I bought the iPhone in an Apple store and not at an AT&T store (which I had to do because all of the AT&T stores were out of iPhones). The Apple employees (as smart as they are with all the Mac products) are seriously lacking on their knowledge of set up for the iPhone AT&T calling plan--which is understandable--but a huge headache when you're trying to do something particular with your calling plan (like making it into a family plan). I also wasn't feeling good about the whole thing because my corporate email wouldn't configure, I was getting slowed down by the lack of actual keys when typing and still the whole lack of MMS thing is a bit annoying since my girlfriend who has a newish Nokia brick phone can send MMS. (Also, does anyone find any irony in the fact that Apple runs its in-store purchases on non-Mac based PDAs? Yah...anyway--)
After all that--and having the phone now for 24 hours--the buyers remorse has began to fade. I've put nearly 10 really awesome and useful apps on to the phone (like Tweetdeck, Mint, Bump, Flixster & Trapster--all free), I've discovered I can turn webpages I frequent (LIKE SYNTHESIS!) into an icon on my iPhone home screen so I can go there with one click off my homescreen AND I even found out how to create ringtones from any song in my iTunes (--to explain that would have to be a whole other blog...which I just might do--stay tuned!).
In conclusion, I think that as the days pass, I will like my iPhone more and miss my BlackBerry less. At least until either of them release a new phone model...which will probably be next week--just to piss me (and everyone else) off.

PS--the lady in the AT&T store said iPhone will be MMS capable in August. Word up.

Generally against apple, but I love my iPhone. Welcome to the iPhone universe!
i’m a mac user who has been resisting the iphone simply because you can only have AT&T as your carrier (coverage isssues). i’m a Sprint girl. i have ipod touch so i know your pain about the key board/typing issue. i just got the Palm Pre which is like if an iphone and a blackberry had a baby Pre would be it. LOVE it. the slightly sticky key pad (so my nails don’t slip off) is my favorite.
to sync up with your PC you have to have MS Exchange Server 2003 which my computer at work doesn’t but eventually it will (i hope). anyway, your blog is what i’ve been thinking about ever since the iphones came out so wanted to comment
i had a blackberry bold, curve, iphone 3g and now the iphone 3gs. i also have had blackjack 2 and the htc tilt.
the iphone is by far the best phone i’ve ever had. the more you have it the more you’ll get use to and like it. the mobileme is worth the extra hundred dollars a year in my opinion. i love it.
this phone doesn’t even feel like a phone. it’s like having a personal assitant.
My Curve is on borrowed time and I’m considering a switch. I have worked through all but 2 things…multi-tasking and notification profiles (not sure that I can live without either)
Is it possible to have notification profiles similar to the setup on the BB?
Here is an example of what I do today…combination of standard BB capability and AlertMatrix by Rex Wireless.
Profile ‘Normal’ — sets the following.
* Phone (normal ringtone for everyone, but a special one for my wife)
* Email (vibrate and ringtone, special tone for wife, different special tone for my boss)
* Virtually every notification can be customized by (vibrate, vibrate and tone, volume, # of beeps, flashing LED, etc.)
I have similar setups for ‘In-Car’, ‘Night’, ‘Loud’, etc. that change the types of notifications. This is incredibly flexible on BB. How close could I get on the iPhone?
Any other thoughts after a longer testing period?
