Man Marries 8 Year Old Girl in Saudi Arabia

In another truly sick reminder that our world is more sick than you can possibly imagine, we have the story of pedophilia in the Middle East. Reports hit the web today of a 47 year old Saudi Arabian man that was given his bride, age 8, from a friend of his. The mother of the child made an attempt to get the marriage annulled, but under their law she legally can't do so because the man is the legal guardian of the girl, so the annulment was denied. To ad insult to injury, under their legal system she can only divorce the man when she reaches puberty.
My question is how the hell do they know if the girl has reached puberty? Did some old guy who has a thing for little girls just waltz in one day and say "I'll be the one to check if they're ready"? I definitely hate perpetuating the thoughts that all Middle Eastern countries have some backwards way about them, mainly because it's a false statement, but it actually took me back quite a bit when I checked this story out. It kind of makes you think how lucky we are to have a (partial) separation of church and state, huh? CNN investigates below.
