here is my unprofessional review:
Go see this movie! The hype is real! And if you can go see it in IMAX, do it. This film shows all those other comic book movies how to do it right. Dark Knight redeems every one of those horrible comic book movies (see: Ghost Rider, Catwoman, Electra, Spiderman 3, ect). Hopefully all of Hollywood is taking notes on why this movie is so right.
One of the best parts of the screen play, is that it stands on its own. It does not rely on character flashbacks, or things from the past to explain why things are the way they are. You walk in, the movie kicks off, and doesn’t let up. No need of an explanation why the joker is insane. He is just insane. No explanation why Harvey Dent is being the prosecutor he is, he just is. You don’t need to have read the batman comics, or seen the other movies to keep up with the film, altho there is plenty of nods to “Batman the Beginning” and the comic books, but those are subtle and seen more as “gems” for those who have grown up with these stories.
As for the yearning question. Is Heath Ledger really as good as everyone is making him out to be? To be honest. YES. He really is that good. I was never a fan of his acting (altho 10 Things I Hate About You, really is a guilty pleasure), and I was disappointed (and shocked) when i first heard he was playing the Joker. But I must say he won me over, and I am now in the camp of all those movie nerds singing his posthumous praises.
The CGI in this film is tastefully done, and looks realistic (unlike Jar Jar Binks and other crimes against movie history)….spoiler alert coming….Altho Two-face’s face makes you wonder if you are watching the Final Fantasy movie again (yes that is a bad thing), but other than that, all the CG was very well done, and blended in perfectly with all the amazing cinematography.
If I was forced to file any complaints against this movie (which would be hard to do), they would be as follows (in no particular order):
Spoilers to follow:
1. Two-face’s CG facial job
2. How uninteresting I find Maggie Gyllenhaal (altho she is slightly better than the brain-washed robot we know as Katie Holmes)
3. Christian Bale’s over done raspy voice (only when he is in the suit)
4. a line delivered by Ledger “You complete me”…which echos perfectly the sentiments of this complex character, yet makes you recall scenes from Austin Powers with Mini-me. And judging my the laughs from the audience (during this intense scene) I was not the only one.
5. the fact that a whole building can be disrupted by a cell phone (if you have seen it you know what i am talking about).
But if you notice above how hard I had to dig for unfavorable parts of this movie, that is a sentiment to just how good this movie is.
I give it five out of five batwings!
