Marijuana Potency At Its Highest

The potency of marijuana increased last year to the highest it has been in 30 years. A report released by the White House said that this means there are greater health risks for those who view the drug as harmless. Analysis was done at the University of Mississippi's Potency Monitoring Project to track the average amounts of THC. Levels have more than doubled since the 1980's due to sophisticated growing techniques, like hydroponic systems.

John Walters, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, said there are risks of psychological, cognitive and respiratory problems and the potential to become dependent on cocaine and heroin. I just have to say I have never used marijuana then felt the sudden urge to pick up a needle but hey, whatever. There's no data that shows the higher potency leads to more addiction. Marijuana withdrawl symptoms are said to be mild irritability, craving for weed and decreased appetite. Well then wouldn't you just smoke some weed, be happy, end the cravings and eat a crapload of food? Being hungover from drinking way to many dollar beers or running out of coffee seems way worse. Like a psychology professor at the State University of New York said, "Stronger cannabis leads to less inhaled smoke."

I must say, I really enjoy your articles, but this one really got me high! haha My dad has a medical marijuana card and has been smoking for almost 30 years. He couldn’t agree with your article more. The potency of weed has definitely doubled. It took 40 days for the meds to leave my dad’s system. 40 DAYS! In the bay, they refer to it as “Mutant weed” because after getting all meded up, all you can do is walk around like a mutant!

C’mon people. Use common sense. Marijuana has been the same geneticaly since God put it here on this earth. Technology has allowed us to grow healthier plants. Selective breeding by man has allowed for the growth of the dominant strains ,of the Cannabis species. Hysteria from our sad ignorant and evil Government has lead people to belive that some magical force has made “weed” today more potent. For example. In the 1960’s grow lights were not as advanced and powerful. As well as the nutrients used to feed the plants. For indoor use. Now here in 2008 technology speaks for its self. As well, most of the potent Grade A marijuana grown in the US is cultivated indoors. On the other hand most street sold marijuana that was sold in the 1960s through even today comes from Mexico grown outdoors therefore allowing for Male cannabis plants to polinate the Female cannabis plants. Ultimately causing many seeds to be produced inside the Female buds. Therefore directing the plants energy to produce seeds and not as much bud matter and making for crappy herb. After smuggled/shipped in packages known as bricks and having traveled many many miles and gone through so many hands thus making for some awful product for the end user. Indeed Marijuana can be more potent at times. Considering the factors it took to cultivate it. It’s also sad that people have been brainwashed by the ignorance of our DEA. Cannabis is Medicine! Leave them alone you people, Weed is a harmless drug, more so than alcohol and tobacco. ‘God’ put weed here but not nicotine. When are they going to make weed legal in the U.S.?

JBN: Are you aware that there are different “strains” of marijuana? Obviously, this implies slight differences in genetic makeup, thus allowing Darwinian rules set in. Different strains can be selectively bred, resulting in “better” (or worse) pot. Also, DNA is not static. It is very vulnerable to the elements, and is changed significantly each generation. The stabilizing factor is the LARGE numbers of a plant species.

After selective breeding and (likely) DNA coding errors, if a grower gets some great pot out of it, those seeds are much more likely to be sold and/or reused. Look at those seed websites.

Higher THC count means you smoke less to reach your desired plateau.

“Back in the day” you had to smoke 3 joints to get high. This means smoking more paper and more plant material.

Now you can buy an 1/8th (3.5 grams) that can easily last 2 weeks. You take a TINY pinch off and stick it in a vaporizer.

So yes, of course THC count has increased and will continue to increase, the same way we’re always looking for ways to make plants more resistant to bugs and selectively breeding for bigger yield (bigger tomatoes, better tasting tomatoes, etc).

For all pot advocates – I’m on your side but let’s drop the “It’s natural” argument. Natural vs synthetic doesn’t mean much. There are plenty of synthetic drugs that are perfectly safe, and even more natural ones that aren’t (Datura, alcohol etc).

It should be legalized because there’s nothing wrong with sitting in your Lay-Z boy and smoking a joint, and spending the rest of the night reading, playing video games, drawing, etc. Busting into people’s homes and arresting them for doing this is irrational and dangerous.

Anytime you think of something dangerous about drugs, be sure to think twice to make sure it’s not related to the drug war instead of the drug itself. i.e., drug dealers shooting each other, lacing drugs, selling to kids, etc.. are all related to the drug war and not any individual drug.

I saw this movie once, and the main character wanted to work for the CIA. When they finnaly called him up to take his medical tests, he had just smoked some pot and was stoned as hell.
But in the movie they said that it needs about 3 days to get out of your system… i never heard of 40. It seems extremely long

it all depends what you smoke how much you smoke and how fast your body metabolises. weed is stored in fat so the faster your body metabolises the faster it will leave your system. if you weigh 60 kg and smoke a joint of chronic it can be in your system 2 weeks if you dont exeresise at al but if you are active and constantly replacing your fat it will be much shorter, the more you fat you burn the lower the weed to fat ratio will get
