Film Independent announced Tuesday the nominees for their 2008 Spirit Awards. Best Feature nods went to France’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the Bob Dylan-inspired I’m Not There, A Mighty Heart starring Angelina Jolie, Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park and Juno, a comedy about an unplanned pregnancy penned by first-time screenwriter Diablo Cody. I’m keeping my fingers that the latter gets a fairly wide release (wide enough to come here to cow town) because the trailers look hilarious, and Ellen Page, nominated for Best Female Lead for her work in the title role, is a real talent. Juno is due out this “holiday season” according to its official Web site and also stars Superbad‘s Michael Cera (also pretty darn awesome). Cody and director Jason Reitman also took home nods for Best First Screenplay and Best Director respectively. A full list of nominees can be found here. The awards will air on AMC and IFC on Feb. 23rd, 2008.
